Goblin Valley State Park | Location Highlight
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if you’re looking to take engagement photos or elope, you’ll definitely find the perfect photo spot for you in Utah. This state has some of everything, from pine forests to lakes, to hoodoos and red rocks. And Goblin Valley is definitely one of the most unique spots I’ve ever seen in Utah.
Goblin Valley is a state park located near the middle of Utah, just outside the town of Hanksville. It’s not far from both Capitol Reef National Park and Canyonlands National Park, but it honestly looks like it’s on another planet! Central and southern Utah have huge swaths of red rock and hoodoos that are so cool and unique. All of southern Utah can get crazy busy during the summer, so I generally recommend people visit in March or September-November.
If you’re traveling around Moab or Southern Utah and are thinking about making a stop through Goblin Valley I definitely recommend it. But you will have to put in a little extra preparation to beat the heat and crowds. As I said, Utah parks can get so crowded in the summer. If I’m shooting at or visiting a park I usually try and get there around sunrise to beat the crowds a bit. Plus this time of day is usually cooler AND has pretty magical light. An all-around win in my book! Weekdays are best if you can swing it since there are usually fewer crowds. Spring weekends from April to June are usually peak business, especially Memorial Day Weekend. If you’re hoping to have a little more privacy, I would really recommend avoiding those times.
Now let’s talk fees. A Utah State Parks Pass is required for entry. You can purchase a day-use pass, which is $20 for a private vehicle or $25 for a vehicle on weekends or holidays. Goblin Valley does require a permit for ALL drone use. You can get a permit at the visitors center for $10. However, permit blackouts may occur during special events, emergencies, or during peak visitation. If you’d like you can print out a drone permit before arriving at the park. If you are planning on eloping or hosting any other type of event in Goblin Valley, you must also apply for a $50 Special Use Permit.
As with all Utah State and National Parks, your visit will require a little planning and effort. But these gorgeous parks are one of my favorite things about living in Utah! I love having reserved nature land that is always there for us to visit and enjoy. And I especially love when I get to work as a photographer in the parks. The engagement session shown here was a sunrise session and I loved every second of it! I love contrast of the all-black outfits against the otherwordly red rock formations. It’s so fun to see how each couple makes their session completely their own and fits their style. I hope you'll consider reaching out if you're coming through Utah and are looking to capture some stunning and memorable photos! I can't wait to work with you.
