How to Elope at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah
The Bonneville Salt Flats are such a unique place and a must see location in Utah! Just 1.5 hours west of Salt Lake, it spans for miles and miles and looks other worldly. If you’re thinking about eloping or having a wedding ceremony there, here are some steps to help you!
PAPERWORK/PERMITS
You’ll first need to apply for a Utah marriage license, which you can do HERE.
A special use permit is required to have a ceremony there. You can look at permit info HERE or contact Peter Monson at (801) 977-4356 or bmonson@blm.gov.
You need to have an officiant and 2 adult witnesses to sign your marriage license.
WHEN TO GET MARRIED AT THE SALT FLATS
It totally depends on what vibe you’re looking for! The salt flats are dry in the summer and fall (they get cracks in the salt which gives it a cool texture) and in the winter they get flooded/wet/reflective, depending on how much rain and snow there has been. When it’s flooded, the water is really cold, so keep that in mind. The flats are also a little windier and colder because there is so much open space.
Make sure to check for events happening there so you can avoid those dates! Bonneville Speed Week happens every year so plan around that.
For less busy times, try going on a weekday. It gets busy during the day and around sunset, which can still be fine but sunrise will be a lot less busy.
The salt flats are so big that when it’s dry you can drive on them and find a more secluded spot farther away from the road and other people.
